WHAT´S THE WEATHER LIKE ?
In a word- wonderful ! As a general guideline you can see todays weather on our homepage anytime but if you are going to live here you probably need more detail about the microclimates. So, pulling no punches, here´s local knowledge:
The climate varies between continental and Mediterranean. Riopar has proper seasons. Area around Elche de la Sierra has a Mediterranean climate (similar to, but drier air than inland Costa Blanca.) Most districts are pleasantly forested, or covered in olives, almonds or vines, and mountain herbs are abundant. Spring and early summer are a glorious explosion of wildflowers. Apart from the whole-of-Spain temperature drops around 14th August, and again the "Gota fria" for a few days in November, the coldest months are late Jan and early Feb. A week or so of snow, twice, is average, when Riopar is flooded with Spanish Murcia city folk whizzing up to see the snowcapped mountains whilst it lasts ! The generally dry air is extremely pleasant, and the winter days are often inspiringly crisp and clear. Winds are rare- we do not suffer from the Mistral nor the Tremontane.
Summer lasts for around five months, although there are numerous clear sunny days throughout the year
*MORE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE ! Spanish weather news is worth noting as there is usually a clearly shown oblique line running from the south of Barcelona through the south of Madrid to south-west spain, and the "good " weather is below it. That´s us.
CLOSEST AIRPORTS ?- Alicante or Murcia – both easily less than 2 hours to the ‘gateway’ of the Sierra ie Elche de la Sierra – although some of the properties are a further hour or so across truly beautiful scenery
PUBLIC TRANSPORT ? Very good : Good between the villages and for longer distances . A coach service connects the outlying areas with Hellin and from there to Alicante- five hours for 12 euros - worth doing just to see some more of Spain !
*HOSPITALS ?- in Hellin – a 20min car journey from Elche de la Sierra.
*HOW ABOUT EVERYDAY MEDICAL SERVICES ?- There is a medical centre in each of the larger villages. In the smaller villages there is a weekly mobile clinic. Efficient and regular ambulance transport service.
*WHAT ABOUT VETS ? All the larger villages have at least one vet., and we have always found most Spanish people to be as crazy about their domestic and working animals as the British !
*DENTAL TREATMENT ? - is modern, much cheeper and quicker than UK and is available in each of the larger villages
*POSTAL SERVICE ?- excellent ! Better than high density areas in costal regions both for speed (2 to 3 days to and from the UK) and service (to the door).
*SCHOOLS ? - There are no international schools in the area – but English children are very welcomed in the friendly local schools. An 8yr old English girl started school in Elche de la Sierra a year ago and is happy and already well established - and now speaking better Spanish than most of us !. She has Spanish lessons twice a week while the Spanish children are learning English.
*AND LIBRARIES ?- Each of the larger villages have a library offering free internet access, DVDs as well as, of course, books (Spanish childrens books highly recommended for adults learning Spanish !).
*WHAT ABOUT INTERNET IN SPAIN ?- Broadband is widely available even in some of the small villages such as Penarrubia. Elche de la Sierra has a small internet centre and computer shop.Hellin has various internet facilities.
