Welcome to your Sierra del Segura property LIFESTYLE !

No matter how super the property in Spain, lifestyle is the heart and soul of continuing satisfaction.

So.... how IS the lifestyle in the Sierra del Segura ?, and what IS there in the villages ? Are the people friendly ? What is there to do ?  Here are a few pointers-

In summer many villages have open air swimming pools where you can swim and sunbathe for around 3 euros a day !

Almost all of the villages have bars and restaurants with traditional food such as tortilla, various tapas, game stew etc.
Everybody of every age seems to go out to eat! The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere invariably friendly.

The whole region is well served by traditional specialist shops such as butchers, fruit and fish  shops, and bakers, with friendly service and where you can usually park right outside ! Add to that, weekly markets, small supermarkets, and vans that call to your door in the small villages and its easy to see that life here is pleasant.

The really big supermarkets such as Lidl, Mercadona can be found in Hellin. If the old fashioned way of life and convenience  get boring, theres always the  Ikea en route to Murcia about an hour from Elche de la Sierra and a Carrefour  on the way into Albacete, again about an hour.

June to October is fiesta time and it is possible to party every weekend and enjoy the peace of the countryside during the week!

The Sierra del Segura and its hugely beautiful adjacent partner the Sierra De Segura is an outdoor pursuits paradise, including a long-distance route of over 100 kilometres.

Unspoilt, authentic, traditional Spain in villages whose very names evoke romance, intrigue and the desire to visit- Ayna, Bogarra, Cortijo Juliana, Elche de la sierra, Ferez, Gontar, Hellin, Isso, Jartos, Lietor, Majada Carrasca, Nerpio, Parolis, Quilez, Riopar Siles, Tejeruela, Vegallera,Yeste, Zapateros!

Below is a taster of what to do in the long lovely sunny days and don't forget much of the Spanish life is after sunset, and the night-time is to discover !

Ayna

Pop 1000. Short walking routes, mountain climbing and tennis courts, cave paintings
Ayna is justly famous for its setting in a stunning gorge of solid naked rock.
It is easily accessed by a super new road that snakes through gorgeous scenery from Elche Sierra.

Elche De La Sierra

Pop 4000.
Elche De La Sierra has a scruffy road through it. Just as well, as it leaves the real village quaint, busy, and pleasant!
A huge 17th century church, a garden plaza and cultural centre make up its centre, and has a busy street market every Thursday. Two big fiestas a year as well as a 24 hour festival in which the calles are closed to traffic (the reason will remain a secret till you come!) as well as four bar-discos make this a lively little place.
Hiking between 15 – 25kms, hunting and fishing as well as having a sports centre with tennis courts, fronton, football and basketball. Top quality organic olive oil. Schools, and public transport.

And all this within five minutes drive of the gushing Rio Segura, for tranquil fishing, walking and bathing.

Fuente Higuera

If you were hurrying to get to the fiestas of Elche de la Sierra or to the unique charms of Riopar, you could easily drive past the two traditional bread shops with traditional bread ovens stoked by wood, a meat and provisions shop, and three good bar/restaurants- two of them excelling in barbeque meats.
But should you feel that the hurrying has to stop, and where better to stop than the middle of unspoilt Spain, you would surely find this a very happy place as you relax facing south to the brightness and warmth of the sun.
No wonder the Spanish, not to mention the Lynx and the eagles and mountain goats and wild boar and deer and butterflies and larks keep it secret!

Molinicos

MOLINICOS is typical small village 15 minutes from Elche Sierra tucked between two almond clad mountains and within excellent hiking country.
Very traditional narrow calles lead down to a flowing stream with ducks and geese and direct access to marked walking routes. All this, and a beautifully situated open-air village swimming pool in the summer months, a number of restaurants and bars, a church, a post office, a bank, shops and town hall.
A short drive from Molinicos leads to unspoilt mountain tracks that lead deep into the Sierra for walking, mountain-bikes or horse riding. In the months of high summer there are twice-weekly guided hikes.
Pop1422 A center for hiking with between 1 ˝ - 30 kms marked routes with various levels of difficulty. Well served by activities and courses all year – from basic computing for children from 4yrs onwards through youth theatre and ‘hiphop' dancing to aerobics – all at very reasonable prices.Schools, and public transport.
Rosemary honey and pure olive oil are made here.

Penarrubia

Penarrubia benefits from a Mediterranean climate and is set within open rolling countryside dotted with vineyards, almond plantations and olive groves. Some of the work is still done by donkey, and each day sees two of them laden ready for work. One even takes back the shopping- alone, if it gets fed up of waiting.
The stunningly located spar centre/hotel and mountain village of TUS is approximately 40 minutes scenic drive and a tranquil reservoir is just 10 minutes away. Nestling at the foot of the ruby peak, Penarrubia is a scattered cluster of three or four well-preserved areas. With a thriving bar/restaurant and small hotel and a shop that sells all the everyday necessities. it is an ideal location for those wanting traditional village life but with easy access to the large town of Hellin - just 25 minutes away.
Penarrubia is named after a massive outcrop of rose coloured rock that has thousands of years of human habitation etched on its near-inaccessible summit. This dominant rock glows vibrantly and magically in the setting sun.

Riopar

Riopar thrives!
A leafy town in the middle of high and wild mountain scenery, with two hundred year old avenues of plane trees and with all facilities. Very popular as a holiday destination by the Spanish due to its 18th century bronze works and shops, its massive natural water falls, rivers and caves.
A paradise for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. Horse riding on tracks and school, caving, running, cycling and hiking in the spring and summer months, and guided fungi picking in autumn!
Pop 1500. Famous for caving, hiking, hunting and fishing. Bicycle hire, accompanied horse riding, carriage riding, clay pidgeon shooting and mountaineering, rafting, 4 x wheel drive routes and astronomy courses – as well as courses in painting and traditional dance. Schools.

Yeste

This is a buzzy little town with daily bus service to Hellin, schools and Thursday street market. With its newly built 350 seat theatre, ancient castle, church, shops, hotel, bars and restaurants, this is a village that has much to offer.
On a high point of the Sierra, it is a veritable gateway to even further stunning areas, including Andalucia.
An hour's highland drive away from Yeste is the Parque Cultural of NERPIO famous for extensive cave paintings.
Population 1800. Hiking routes 10 – 30 kms, abseiling, horse riding, trekking, caving, and ravine exploration. Sweet white wine and a delicious coffee liquor are made here. Schools. Public transport
